Gilles Arpin, Assoc. IALD

Eclairage Public
President
Montreal, Quebec Canada
Born in Montreal Gilles Arpin comes from the show business industry. For over 20 years he practiced theatrical work ashead electrician, lighting director and designer, technical director and production manager. He was involved mainly withopera, ballet and musicals. He learned from famous lighting designer and scenographers such as Nicholas Cernovitch,New York; Roberto Oswald, Argentina; Joseph Svoboda, Prague and Michel Beaulieu, Montreal. On tour with shows hevisited many interesting locations. Passionate with cities and urbanity, he studied urbanism for two years…, it becameobvious to him that a new discipline was emerging in urban design. In Europe lighting was already considered as a designmaterial over its functional uses. From 1991 to 1996 he realized some projects in Montreal and helped raise the interestfor urban lighting design in the community. In 1996 he founded EclairagePublic inc. the firm is dedicated to lighting thepublic spaces indoor and outdoor. Arpin's interest for urban lighting resides in his attempt to domesticate the public space. His approach is environmental and perceptive, focused on human activities… not for their eyes-only. The value of hiswork is paid back when the citizens appropriate themselves the public space. Urban lighting design is not only a matter ofcity ornamentation but also a way to appeal to our sociality in the progress of safety, comfort and ambience. The urbantrend of the lighting design applies in many facilities where indoor and outdoor are linked to offer the architectural andlandscape space as a whole, branding the site with a unique nocturnal look inside out.
