Cynthia Murphy, Jr. Assoc. IALD

Available Light, Inc.
Salem, MA United States
The way that people interact with light—psychologically and biologically—first led Cynthia to theatrical lighting, then to media design, then architectural lighting, and, by mixing it all together, to Available Light!

Prior to joining Available Light, Cynthia worked on a research team funded by the National Institute of Health, developing lighting design techniques and software tools to serve the visually impaired population. During her graduate studies, she was a guest lecturer for the Indiana University Department of Dance, discussing the design and implementation of interactive media projection in the performance environment. As co-chair of the Boston Society of Architects Emerging Professionals Network, she is active in expanding mentoring and professional development programs for the design community.

Projects on which Cynthia has been a critical team member include a renovation/addition to the Princeton Theological Seminary, new research labs for Harvard University, the new home of Payette Architects, the John Hancock 150th Anniversary Exhibit, creating a Master Plan/Design Guidelines report for the Massachusetts State House, daylighting studies for the White House Visitor’s Center in Washington DC, and the renovation of Boston's historic Hayden building into condominiums.

Cynthia was a recipient of the 2009 ETC Student Sponsorship, 2010 IES Young Professionals Scholarship, and 2011 IALD Emerging Lighting Design Professionals Initiative Grant. Winner of a 2012 Illumination Engineering Society Award of Merit for the Sherman Fairchild Laboratory Renovation.
