LIES, DAMN LIES, AND PHOTOMETRICS
LIES, DAMN LIES, AND PHOTOMETRICS
Tad Trylski, Associate IALD, Light Bureau, London, UK
How can that one fixture can be visibly brighter than another, even though its data sheet states a lower output? Comparing two light sources, how can the one with lower CRI give better color discrimination? As the LED "gold-rush" continues, the metrics are becoming more complex and open to interpretation. This presentation collates evidence and research to challenge popular understanding – or misunderstanding – of some of the most fashionable performance indicators in lighting specification, including illuminance, color temperature, beam angles, LOR, CRI, MacAdam's ellipses and even the SI unit of light itself, the candela.

LIGHT AND HUMAN HEALTH
LIGHT AND HUMAN HEALTH
George Brainard, PhD, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA USA
In the art and science of architectural lighting, four major traditional objectives have been to provide light that: 1) is optimum for visual performance; 2) is visually comfortable; 3) permits aesthetic appreciation of the space; and 4) conserves energy. Published scientific research has confirmed that light is a potent stimulus that regulates human circadian, neuroendocrine and neurobehavioral physiology. Consequently, light can profoundly influence human health and wellbeing. This emergent science provides the basis for major changes in future architectural lighting strategies.

MUSEUM LIGHTING PANEL
MUSEUM LIGHTING PANEL
Scott Rosenfeld, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC USA
Andreas Schulz, IALD, Licht Kunst Licht AG, Bonn, Germany

This panel will describe lighting techniques found in art gallery environments. Mr. Rosenfeld will discuss his work lighting museums with large quantities of focusable luminaires that are individually tuned to reveal artist intent.  He will also discuss basic techniques for preserving light-sensitive material and share assessment methods that helped his museums transition to SSL lighting. Mr. Schulz will discuss the integration of daylighting into museum environments, using focused lighting systems as supplemental systems for special applications. He will share how to compare different lighting systems based on their ability to create a luminous environment in which to view art.

ENERGY CODES: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
ENERGY CODES : OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Peter Raynham, The Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, London, UK
Glenn Heinmiller, IALD, Lam Partners, Cambridge, MA USA

Marty Salzberg, IALD, Cline Bettridge Bernstein, New York, NY USA

Join three lighting experts, from two sides of the Atlantic, to explore the impact of energy and building codes on lighting, lighting design and design practice. Glenn Heinmiller, IALD; Peter Raynham; and Marty Salzberg, IALD, will discuss the "alphabet soup" of modern energy codes: "Part L", "ASHRAE/IES 90.1", "IECC" and others. The session aims to fly above the detail of specific code provisions and explore the ways in which codes form both limits and opportunities for professional lighting designers. Bring your code-related issues to discuss: the session will feature lively interchange among the panelists and between panelists and audience.

Key Questions:

  • Which aspects of codes cause the most problems?
  • Where do you see opportunities to simplify codes?
  • Share examples of steps you have taken to address code problems.
  • Share examples of codes as a business opportunity and how that has worked out.
