A SOCIAL HISTORY OF LIGHT AND LIGHTING
A SOCIAL HISTORY OF LIGHT AND LIGHTING
David DiLaura, Acuity Brands Lighting, Boulder, CO USA

Lighting has helped determine when and how we work and play. It has expanded our chance at education, brought us knowledge and helped us to harness technology. Lighting has been woven into the very fabric of civilization's infrastructure and become an industry unto itself. Lighting has given us a chance to be dangerous, affecting the environment and even our own health. This seminar will explore these and other ways in which lighting was and still is a social issue. Attendees will learn the principal aspects of lighting's social history and see how their professional work shapes and determines, in part, society's future.

THE ART OF DAY AND NIGHT : DAILY RHYTHMS AS INSPIRATION FOR LIGHTING DESIGN
THE ART OF DAY AND NIGHT: DAILY RHYTHMS AS INSPIRATION FOR LIGHTING DESIGN [45 MINUTES]
Susanna Douglas, Loisos + Ubbelohde, Alameda, CA USA
Current research on Circadian rhythms, the advent of color-shifting LED technology and increasingly strict regulations for protecting the night sky all support the importance of maintaining daily rhythms of light and darkness. Ms. Douglas will incorporate several historical and contemporary case studies to offer inspiring examples of the art of integrating daylight and of preserving the night, as well as strategies for celebrating the swing conditions of dusk and dawn.

FOLLOWING THE SUN
FOLLOWING THE SUN [45 MINUTES]
Gustavo Avilés, IALD, Lighteam, Mexico City, Mexico
When we approach light or lighting, there is a feeling of "something missing." What is the meaning of working with light? Knowledge obtained solely from rational efforts forms a value system accounting for measurable material facts. Looking back to solar cultures that use sunlight as a reference of time and space and as a carrier of spiritual messages, we can realize the abstract power of light. In this session, we will reflect upon these issues, work to open our attention to other forms of knowledge, unify knowledge and visual practice, and give sense and feeling to our perceptions of light.

LIGHTING POWERS OF TEN: METHODOLOGY FOR DIFFERENT SCALES OF DESIGN
LIGHTING POWERS OF TEN: METHODOLOGY FOR DIFFERENT SCALES OF DESIGN
Enrique Peiniger, IALD, Office for Visual Interaction, New York, NY USA
The Powers of Ten is a design methodology inspired by design icons Charles and Ray Eames and their groundbreaking work in communicating the science behind the Powers of Ten as related to the universe. Translating this idea to the architectural lighting design field, the Lighting Powers of Ten is the basis of a unique design logic that utilizes scaled-based analysis to develop integrated lighting design solutions at every design stage. Mr. Peiniger will share this philosophy and help participants to develop strategic design logic and working methods to bring order to a seemingly chaotic design process.
