DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP: MENTORING IN A DYNAMIC PROFESSION
Nancy Clanton, IALD, Clanton & Associates, Boulder, CO USA
Grace Kim, Schemata Workshop, Seattle, WA USA
John Martin, IALD, Kaplan Gehring McCarroll Architectural Lighting, El Segundo, CA USA
Cynthia Murphy, Design IALD, Available Light, Salem, MA USA
Without strong mentorship, it is nearly impossible for an emerging lighting designer to develop into a polished, well-rounded professional. Whether a designer comes from an education in theatre, engineering or architecture, there is plenty left to learn about the art, science and business of lighting. We will explore the needs and challenges associated with mentoring in the lighting community, examine successful traditional and non-traditional mentoring programs from associated industries and discuss ways that mentoring could be effectively implemented in the lighting community to develop tomorrow's leaders.
